Bancy Hospital
Bill is clearly on our shoulders (Nov. 4, 2006)
Bancy
now - Healed and happy at Kings Kids Village
The Bancy story is turning
out to be a real Kings Kids Village saga. It could well
be a defining moment in our development as a Christian
children's home. In short, the Lord
gave me the privilege of saving someone's life in May
of this year. Bancy had been beaten, raped and left
for dead by five men. I (together with police) rushed
her to the best hospital in Nairobi and put her under
the care of our family doctor. She has fully recovered
after nearly two weeks in ICU and almost a month in
hospital. The children's home she worked for was in
dire need financially and ended up shutting down. We
now have the five children from that home and Bancy
now works as one of our aunti's at Kings Kids Village.
The hospital bill is nearly $22, 000 including the private
doctors bills. It was originally due to be paid by December
15th of 2006. Yesterday we made a new arrangement with
Aga Khan Hosptal to pay just under $10,000 of the hospital
part of the bill by July 3, 2007 (They have waived nearly
$2,000 of the $12,000 as their contribution to the cause)
Then they have broken with their normal policy and are
allowing us to settle with the doctors individually.
So we are starting the Bancy Recovery Fund,
which will receive money for three things... 1. The
$10,000 Aga Khan bill. 2. The close to $10,000 in private
doctor bills 3. We are considering hiring the services
of a lawyer ($400) to put the purpetrators behind bars
and out of harm for good. See the Bancy page for more
details...
Christen Endures
Three Days in the Hospital (Nov. 1,, 2006)
It all started with a
bad cut on her left arm when she accidentally tripped
and put her arm through a glass door. We saw the hand
of the Lord from the first moment, as the glass cut
deep, but missed all nerves and all major blood vessels
in her arm. But, someone slipped up somewhere and the
arm ended up infected. Finally, last week we got her
a letter of reference from the children's hospital where
we had been treating her to our family doctor, who immediately
admitted her to a major hospital. After 30 hours of
strong IV administered anti-biotics, she went into surgery
and got the wound properly taken care of. She came home
last thursday and has been the princess around here
ever since. Thank God for His care over our kids...
Our Old Faithful
gets a New Engine (Oct. 17, 2006)
Our old 1989 model van
finally blew its engine after 275,000 Km (165,000 Miles).
We had the choice of selling it for next to nothing,
rebuilding its gasoline engine for about $1,200 and
third, switching it for a slightly used Diesel engine...
We chose the latter option and we are up and running
in style... We now are now paying less per gallon and
getting better fuel efficiency; a big deal in Kenya
where diesel is only $4.00 a gallon and gasoline is
about $4.20 a gallon. God is faithful in all of this
and has already provided the money for the switch...
Up and Running
again... Complete with Updates (Oct. 3, 2006)
Halelujah!!! We are finally
up and running and I am also learning to update the
website. From now on, if there is any break in communication,
I will be totally responsible myself... Of course, there
are always a few other things I could blame my negligence
on, but we won't go into those unforseen factors right
now... If, for any reason, you need to know more than
what I update on this site, you can also check out our
new blog at news-from-nairobi.blogspot.com.
US Team of 22 people:
Ten days of fun, sweat and tears of joy (Aug. 19, 2005)
How do you take care of 22 people and cater for their
needs as you get them from meeting to meeting and keep
them all happy at the same time... Well, it was much
easier than we had thought it might be. The team from
Spenserport Assembly in a suberb of Rochester, NY was
well prepared and ready to tough out conditions much
harder than we threw at them. We housed them in our
upper Faith House apartments and they fit in like they
belonged. In the 7 days they ministered with us, we
did 5 mornings of Vactation Bible School to over 300
kids from Huruma. Three afternoons, we visited a different
orphanage where we played, sang and loved on kids. We
also joined a team from Huruma Church to paint our
meeting hall. The teens on the team also got to participate
in a teens outreach extravaganza called X-Treme weekend
with our main church's youth. Before they came,
I had my doubts as to whether we could handle a team
of that size, and now I know we can. Although I would
still rather have a smaller team, groups of all
sizes are welcome to come minister along side of
us...
Vehicle Update:
God is good in the middle of challenges (Aug. 19, 2005)
We have continued to have challenges in the area of
transport around here. Last time we told you about the
accident that left our older van in the shop for up
to three weeks. Well, the mechanic did his best and
were able to get that back to us early so we could use
it for the time of our 22 person team. We have use it
and it has been a God send. Dad and Mom's van had developed
engine problems as well and we thought we had that taken
care of. The day the team arrived, they had an accident
with that van, which has kept it in the shop the whole
time the team was here. Our bus was a great help transporting
the team around, but even that was a challenge, due
to a major water leak somewhere in the radiator or engine.
We had to carry around a 2 gallon jerry can of water
with us and fill the radiator everytime we started the
bus. Once I forgot to do it and made a silly blunder
of not vacating the bus before checking the radiator.
The result was bad. Hot water spewed out of the radiator
and burned at least three of the team members. Thank
God, they were not serious burns and we had no repeats
of that again. So, now we should get my dad's van back
tomorrow and then will be able to put my old van in
to finish its body work. Then the bus will get its water
problem fixed. The one vehicle that has been there for
us throughout this time has been our new van, which
was provided by many of our supporters through the efforts
of my brother, ,Phil, last year... Thanks Phil and Thanks
to God, who knows exactly what we need and when we need
it. (Mat. 6:33).
US Team of 22 visits
us from 6 th – 16 th August (Aug 1, 2005)
We are making final preparations for a team coming to
visit us this weekend… They are from Rochester, NY USA
and are going to be volunteering in several ways. One
way is going to join with the children's church of our
Huruma church and facilitate a Vacation Bibleschool
for up to 300 children in Huruma and neighboring areas.
That will be in the mornings of next week. During the
afternoons, they will be volunteering at various orphanages
around the city, including Kings Kids Village and Joy
Divine Rehab Centre. They will be staying with us at
Kings Kids and have donated furnishings for the upper
two apartments including beds, matresses and a fridge
and stove for one of the apartments. We are really looking
forward to their visit and ask for your prayers as they
are here…
Vehicle Challenges (Aug. 1, 2005)
Two years ago, a local tour company
gave Kings Kids Village a bus from their fleet. Getting
it ready to use for our guests has been quite a long
story, but we should have it registered by Tuesday of
this week. It has been a challenge to get it registered.
Adding to that, the van we just gave over to Kings Kids
Village was involved in an accident two weeks ago. It
has major body damage, but should be on the road by
the time the team gets here. Then this past week, Paul
and Eleanor's van overheated. It is now in the shop
to access the damage (if any) to the cylinders. It should
be ready to drive this Wednesday. In the mean time we
are very thankful for Phil Stern, who had the insight
to help raise funds for a new van for Jon and Molly.
That new (1997) van has been the only operational vehical
at KKV for the last week and has kept us going along
with a few scheduling miracles. Thank God for His grace…
The search for house parents continues
(Aug. 1, 2005)
We ask for your prayers
as we continue to search for parents for our expanding
orphange. We have six children at present, but have
the facilities in place to multiply that to 32 children
by the end of this year. The real bottle-neck in the
works is getting three sets of parents who will bond
with the vision of KKV. This is a real challenge since
there are so many people in Kenya at large who are fatherless.
Single parenthood is one of the underlying social delemas
interconnected with Kenya's growning number of orphans.
We need three miracles. Please pray.
Registering as
a "Company" (July 13th, 2005)
We have been trying to register as a trust with the
Kenya Government since November 2002. Since trusts are
not being issued since before that time, we are now
going a different route. We are registering as a Company
of limited guarentee for the operation as a charitable
organization. This will allow us to own the orphanage
land in the name of Kings Kids Village, which is a requirement
to be registered as an orphanage by the Department of
Children's Services of the Kenya Government.
III Phase Meters
installed (July 8th, 2005)
Our Three Phase electrical supply wait is over after
over a year. We are presently getting Faith House connected
to the new board, which will allow us to set up our
solar powered invertors and hot water heater boosters.
Our Bus
is up and running (July 13th 2005)
In 2002, we were given an 18 passenger bus by a tour
coumpany here in Nairobi. Since then, we have struggled
getting it ready for use for the orphanage. At one point,
the starter was stollen out of it. We have been looking
for another one for about 6 months, We now have it installed
and are ready to finalize it for road use by getting
it inspected and a speed governor installed. We will
be using it heavily next month when we host a 22 member
mission team. |
